HELP SAVE SOME LOCAL HISTORY ~
ONE LITTLE LODGING AT A TIME!
There is so much fascinating culture and amazing history in our southern Ohio Appalcahian hills, that we want to share it with our Guests! We feel the best way to do this is to restore a lodging choice with a connection to some interesting aspect of our locale. This idea is used extensively throughout Britain and Europe and Sue and Jim have enjoyed staying in such lodging, complete with their ancient quirks and spirits of place. Each Historic Host will have a binder full of related history and Visitor information about places to experience.
Finished and available is our largest lodging choice ~
Stairway House in Zaleski
near
Lake
Hope and on the very edge of the
Zaleski
State
Forest. (In fact you can walk two blocks to three Indian mounds, and to the Forest Headquarters.) The house itself has an interesting history and we'll share with you the sad tale of the Polish Count Peter Zaleski, his ill-fated castle (Ravenwood was actually the second Vinton County castle), and the booming mid-19th century iron ore industry of the entire southern Ohio area. Local legend says the stairway in this house is the one salvaged from
Zaleski
Castle. (Other houses all over the Village claim other bits and pieces from the castle.) The house can sleep up to 8-10 people, and you can see accommodation details on www.HistoricHost.com Rates are on the web site and you can book on line or by phone.
Coming very soon are two "new" historic choices: a one-room schoolhouse and a classic 'hill country' cabin with an Appalachian traditional quilt theme. Watch for these soon on the Historic Host web site. We plan to use any and all profits from our historic lodging toward the acquisition and restoration of other unique at-risk buildings in interesting places in an idea we're calling "sustainable preservation through tourism."
