Just under an hour’s drive from Ravenwood Castle, the charming town of Lancaster is a perfect day trip destination. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or someone who loves to shop, Lancaster has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to some must-visit spots to help plan your visit.

FOR NATURE LOVERS

Rising Park
For a bird’s eye view of Lancaster, take a hike up Mount Pleasant in Rising Park. This local park offers scenic trails and picnic areas. If you park near the pond and head up on the trail, you’ll gain 200 feet of elevation over just a quarter mile, but you’ll be rewarded with quite the view at the top.

Rock Mill Covered Bridge
A visit here is like stepping back in time. This historic wooden bridge, built in 1901, spans the Hocking River. Adjacent to the bridge is the restored Rock Mill, a 1824 gristmill that’s open for tours during select hours.

Valley Zipline Tours
For adventure seekers, Valley Zipline Tours offers an exhilarating experience just outside of the city. This popular attraction is family-owned and operated and features a series of ziplines. The course is designed for participants of all skill levels, with expert guides ensuring a safe and memorable adventure. Insider Tip: If you’re visiting with kids, they offer a Mini Zip course!

Wahkeena Nature Preserve
For those looking to connect with nature, Wahkeena Nature Preserve is a hidden gem. Just six miles south of Lancaster, this 150-acre preserve is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life, with a handful of well-maintained trails. Insider Tip: Some reviews recommend a walking stick due to steep hills and leaves.

Picture Perfect Ranch
The ideal destination for anyone who loves animals. This charming, family-owned ranch offers visitors the chance to enjoy a variety of hands-on experiences from guided tours and summer camps to paint parties and a fun gift shop. Visits are by appointment only and you can book directly on their website. Insider Tip: Bring a good pair of walking shoes and some clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty!

Ochs Fruit Farm
Experience the charm of farm life at Ochs Fruit Farm, a family-owned farm that’s been part of the Lancaster community for generations. Ochs has a market where you can purchase fresh produce and other local goods. Insider Tip: The farm has recently introduced a pick your own flower patch. Stay updated on their social media or give them a call to see if it is in season!

FOR HISTORY BUFFS

Gay Fad Studios
Led by Jason and David Annecy, this revived glass company is a must visit. Known for its vibrant hand-painted designs, Gay Fad Studios brings a unique blend of mid-century artistry and charm to collectors and vintage enthusiasts alike. Make sure to check out their retail store and museum. Insider Tip: Don’t forget to take a selfie with one of the Gay Fad Studios murals! Completed in 2021, these murals seek to revive an amazing part of Lancaster’s history.

Ohio Glass Museum
Discover Lancaster’s glassmaking history at the Ohio Glass Museum. The museum features stunning displays of locally made glassware and also offers classes to the public with advanced registration.

The Georgian Museum
Step into the past with a visit to The Georgian Museum, a meticulously preserved 1832 mansion that offers guided tours showcasing the grandeur of 19th-century life in Lancaster. Don’t miss their new award-winning exhibit that highlights the history of Lancaster and Fairfield County.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES

AHA! A Hands-On Adventure
If you’re visiting the area with kids, AHA! is a must-stop. This interactive children’s museum provides space for bigs and littles to learn together through a variety exhibits.  The museum also has a special Calming Corner exhibit in the multipurpose room at least one Thursday afternoon per month.  This is a time for children who may find the main museum floor to be overwhelming to have a smaller, quieter space to enjoy the museum. Art & Clay on Main 
Art & Clay on Main is a hub for creativity and community. This art studio and gallery offers a hands-on experience where visitors of all ages can paint pottery, try their hand at ceramics, and more. Plus, you can order a delicious drink at their in-house café, Square 7 Coffee House.

Lancaster Axes
This axe-throwing venue offers a fun and competitive way to spend time with friends or family, as you learn to hurl axes at targets under the guidance of skilled instructors. Lancaster Axes offers a wide variety of beverages and encourages guests to order takeout from local restaurants or bring their own snacks. Insider Tip: Be sure to make your reservation ahead of your visit!

Barrel & Boar
If you’re craving mouthwatering BBQ, look no further than Barrel & Boar. The restaurant offers a true taste of Southern-style smoked meats, with a menu that features brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. Check out their Facebook page for their special event calendar.

Bob’s Backyard BBQ 
This family-owned restaurant in Lancaster offers extraordinary barbecue and flavorful sides. Their story began in Bob’s backyard where they hosted friends and family for an entire summer trying to perfect their barbeque style. Being a physicist by education, Bob loved the science of smoking meat, and it eventually became a passion.

Cherry Street Pub
When hunger strikes, head to Cherry Street Pub, a beloved local restaurant known for its comfort food, seasonal drinks, and craft beer selection. Insider Tip: The peanut butter and jelly wings and mac and cheese bowls are some of the most popular items!

Double Edge Brewing Company
Located in the heart of Lancaster, this local brewery is known for its wide selection of expertly crafted beers. Check out their event calendar for trivia nights and live music/food truck schedules.

Rockside Winery and Vineyards
Just on the outskirts of Lancaster, this family-owned winery offers beautiful views, a fantastic selection of handcrafted wine,  local craft beers and whiskey, wine slushies, wood fired pizzas, and other small plates. Whit’s Frozen Custard
A newer addition to downtown Lancaster, head to Whit’s Frozen Custard if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat! Create your own sundae, milkshake, or float and check out their to-go freezer for Whitties (sandwiches made with cookies baked fresh in the store!)

Ale House 1890
Ale House 1890 is where you go for historic charm with modern dining options. Housed in a beautifully restored building from the late 19th century, this restaurant and bar serves up a variety of dishes. Check their social media for specials and events! Insider Tip: Ale House 1890 is now open for lunch and happy hour!
