The Mystery of Remington’s Mummy – Sept 6th & 7th!

Summer has just begun, but we here at Ravenwood Castle have already turned our sights towards Fall and the upcoming murder mystery season. Judging by the number of calls and emails we’ve received, we’re pretty sure it’s on your minds as well! So without further ado, I bring you the first event in the 2019-2020 Murder Mystery season – The Mystery of Remington’s Mummy!

When one thinks of Egyptian archaeology, the first name that jumps to mind is likely King Tutankhamun, whose tomb in the Valley of Kings was discovered by archaeologist Howard Carter. While not everyone is familiar with the archaeologist himself, most are aware of the rumored curse on King Tut’s tomb, which allegedly claimed the lives of several of Carter’s team.

Unless one is a student of Egyptology, they are far less likely to have heard of Colonel Frederick Remington, although he too discovered an Egyptian mummy. In order to avoid accusations of capitalizing on Howard’s success, Remington skipped the Valley of the Kings and focused his explorations on the Valley of the Offended Nostrils. There he discovered an unnamed tomb adorned with medical and magical symbols, and a disturbing inscription that the occupant was forever cursed. Remington theorized that the mummy was of an important sorcerer and medical advisor. He chose not to widely report the curse, again to avoid accusations of copying his more well known predecessor.

Sadly for Colonel Remington and the unnamed mummy, his discovery gained virtually no publicity. The British Museum turned up its nose, the Smithsonian refused to display the find, and the mummy was relegated to a dusty basement storeroom. There he lay for nearly a century, until he was recently rediscovered and sent on a tour of the Midwest as a part of a lecture series on the history of ancient medicine.

Shortly into the tour, lecture attendees at the various stops began to report oddities. Many who were suffering from illnesses emerged from the lectures mysteriously cured. Others arrived at the lecture in perfect health, only to come down with inexplicable illnesses shortly thereafter. Concerned over these anomalies, the touring company has canceled all future showings until further research is conducted. As an abundance of caution, the mummy is being left at its most recent stop – Ravenwood Castle – where a lecture on the comparison of medieval and ancient medical techniques had been planned. That caution now appears to have been warranted as the lead researcher – a man in otherwise perfect health – dropped dead within a day of first inspecting the mummy.

Could there be something to the curse Colonel Remington discovered in the mummy’s tomb? Is it possible that this ancient medical practitioner can control life and death from beyond the grave? Or is this just a series of coincidences and mundane foul play combined with overactive imaginations? The castle staff has once again turned to the Ravenwood Detective Agency to investigate. Join us September 6th & 7th and uncover the Mystery of Remington’s Mummy!

Tickets for The Mystery of Remington’s Mummy are $100, and include Saturday night’s dinner. As with all of our mysteries, the event starts with dinner on the first night. Late arrivals will be accommodated as best as possible, but to enjoy the full experience please attempt to arrive early Friday evening.
