Ravenwood Castle has had its fair share of ghostly encounters – or at least, claims of such events. We can’t disclose whether or not we think the Castle may have some spiritual guests among us, as that is for you to decide. However, if it is more tricks than treats you seek, then Ravenwood Castle is a perfect home base for your adventures. After you’re settled in and ready to explore, hit the road to a ghost town just a short drive from the Castle that boasts its fair share of ghost stories.

Little remains of the city of Moonville. Once a former mining community named for the man who operated the town store, Mr. Moon, all that you’ll find now is scattered building foundations, a small cemetery, and the most recognizable remnant: an abandoned railroad tunnel. During Moonville’s heyday in the mid-1800s, there were never more than a hundred people living in the tiny community which leads us to believe there isn’t much possibility for so many spirits sticking around. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Being so close to the Castle, our guests have ventured off to see if they could have an encounter of their own.

The Moonville Tunnel itself is only about 250 feet long and has a slight curve to it. To save money, the tunnel was made very narrow and out of brick. The walls of the tunnel, now adorned with graffiti murals, have been said to elicit cold chills in some visitors.

There are four ghosts that are said to roam around Moonville. Those restless souls being The Engineer, The Brakeman, The Lavender Lady, and The Bully, amongst a handful of other unverified spirits. While each has their own lore, today we will share the alleged story of The Bully.

The Bully is believed to be the ghost of Baldie Keeton. Baldie Keeton was a resident of Moonville and he decided to get drunk one night. It is said that Baldie liked to start fights when under the influence and when Baldie was at the saloon he decided to fight someone, and a group of men had to work to kick Baldie out.

As Baldie stumbled home, he was walking over the Moonville Tunnel when a group of men jumped Baldie and sent him over the side of the tunnel in which he suffered injuries that took his life. No one was ever convicted for Baldie’s death. The legend now says that the ghost of Baldie stands above the tunnel and stares at the approaching visitors and will sometimes throw pebbles down at them.

Once a hub of travel and home to many, Moonville has now been left to the elements as well as any alleged spirits that may reside there. Moonville Tunnel will leave you with a chill of the spine and begs the question: what do you believe?
