Activity Spotlight: Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway has been a vital part of Ohio’s rich railroad history since its founding in 1972. The railway now serves as one of the area’s leading attractions with historic and themed train rides that run throughout the year. Isaac Miller, one of the railway’s volunteers, gives us insight into the history, operations, and legacy of the HVSR.

A Journey Through History

It all began in 1972 when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) sold off some of their underutilized tracks. By 1984, the railway settled on its current route between Nelsonville and Logan, following tracks that date back to the 1800s. This is the time when the area’s booming coal industry demanded efficient transportation. This region, known for its “Little Cities of Black Diamonds,” was once a major hub for coal transport, with Nelsonville being home to the seventh-largest train yard in the U.S.

All Aboard!

The railway now draws audiences from all over. Whether you’re booking for a themed event, an elegant dinner, or a historic ride on an authentic 1920 coal-fired steam locomotive, there is something for everyone. Some of the most popular events include the Santa Trains, where the train is adorned with festive lights, the coursed Dinner Trains offering scenic and delicious meals, and the thrilling Robbery Trains where passengers get to experience an Old West-style train robbery. These are just a few of the special trips that make the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway a year-round attraction, bringing history to life in a fun and interactive way.

What’s Next at the Railway?

The team is currently working to return a 1956 diesel switcher to service. Purchased last year, this piece of history will be used quite a bit on the tracks. Alongside this project, they are working on an elegant table car with permanent tables. This train car will be featured alongside their dining car so that in the future, there will be a permanent dinner train running! The purchase of the dining car back in 2019 has allowed for HVSR to see tremendous growth for the railroad.

Volunteer Roles at HVSR

Isaac gave us insight on the importance of volunteers at HVSR. “The majority of the actual train operation is handled by volunteer members,” Isaac said. “In 2023, we had over 40 volunteers help out on the railroad at some point during the year.” If you’re interested in getting involved at HVSR, Isaac says that they are always looking for more volunteers. Volunteers can help on the train and behind the scenes in the shop and on trackwork. Anyone interested should visit www.hvsry.org/volunteer/ to learn more. However, supporting this historic railway can be as easy as buying a ticket and getting to experience it yourself!
